AI featured throughout this year's TAC Insights SAP for treasury and working capital management conference in Rome. Even so, cloud migration dominated the discussion.
SAP Treasury is moving off legacy on-premise systems and onto the cloud, and that transition shaped conversations throughout the event.
Trillion attended the conference, represented by Harry Gordon (Managing Consultant) and Leon Steffen (SAP Practice Lead), alongside treasury professionals, SAP specialists, banks and technology providers.
With around 250 delegates, the conference felt very different to larger SAP events. Conversations centred on live migration programmes, legacy systems and the practical realities of moving SAP Treasury to the cloud.
1. Cloud migration has moved from planning into delivery, centred on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).
2. Interest in AI is high, but most organisations still need the right SAP foundations before they can adopt it.
3. SAP's 2027 maintenance milestone is influencing treasury migration plans.
4. Demand for experienced SAP Treasury specialists is growing alongside cloud programmes.
Harry had this to say:
"While everyone else is talking about AI platforms, treasury is still getting systems onto the cloud."
SAP is building its newest treasury capabilities on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), and organisations are aligning migration programmes with that roadmap.
Many organisations still run SAP Treasury on legacy on-premise environments. Those systems continue to support day-to-day operations, but they don't provide access to the latest treasury services.
In-House Banking is replacing older approaches such as In-House Cash, while Advanced Payment Management (APM) and Multi-Banking Connectivity (MBC) bring payments and banking connectivity into a single platform. MBC, for example, allows treasury teams to manage bank connections centrally instead of maintaining separate integrations with individual banks.
Treasury teams are preparing for changes like these:
The move extends beyond SAP itself. Mastercard demonstrated payment technology that integrates through MBC, reflecting a broader move towards connected treasury platforms rather than standalone payment solutions.
These are some of the core capabilities organisations are prioritising as part of their SAP Treasury transformation. Learn more about Trillion's SAP Treasury services.
AI featured throughout the conference, but most discussions focused on what organisations need to do before AI becomes practical.
Treasury leaders weren't asking which AI tools to deploy. They were asking how quickly they could modernise the SAP landscape needed to support them.
AI is already influencing investment decisions. AI-assisted forecasting, automation and decision support may come later, but they're already strengthening the business case for cloud migration.
Harry explores this in more detail during Trillion's recent webinar. Watch it here: SAP in the AI Era: Expert Q&A.
Cloud migration delivers value today through newer treasury capabilities, stronger banking connectivity and a modern SAP platform. AI strengthens a business case that many organisations are already building.
For many treasury teams, cloud migration has become the first AI decision.
SAP's published maintenance roadmap has made 2027 an important planning milestone for organisations running eligible SAP Business Suite 7 applications. In broad terms, mainstream maintenance for those applications is due to end, prompting finance and treasury teams to plan their move to S/4HANA.
Treasury leaders are deciding when to migrate, how treasury fits into wider S/4HANA programmes and how to resource projects alongside broader finance and working capital management initiatives.
Migration programmes compete for budget, internal resource and specialist SAP expertise. Starting early gives organisations more flexibility over all three.
Rome highlighted how small the SAP Treasury market remains.
With around 250 delegates, the conference brought together a large cross-section of the treasury community. Many delegates had worked together before or crossed paths on previous programmes. That's typical of SAP Treasury, where experienced specialists often move between the same organisations and transformation projects.
As more organisations move SAP Treasury to the cloud, demand for experienced specialists is increasing. Successful programmes need people who understand treasury processes, SAP architecture, banking connectivity and complex finance transformations alongside the technology itself.
Choosing the platform is only part of a successful migration. Securing the right expertise early is just as important.
The conference confirmed what Trillion is already seeing across the market.
Cloud migration is becoming the foundation for treasury transformation. AI is shaping investment decisions before deployment, and organisations are competing for a limited pool of experienced SAP Treasury specialists.
The strongest programmes don't treat those as separate decisions. They build the business case, define the roadmap and secure specialist expertise together.
